2023-24 Program

Little Wing Nature School is offering a kinder prep program for children ages 4-6 years old.  Our class provides both the predictability and consistency of daily routine, while also allowing new and complex ways to play indoors and outdoors to help develop children's' intellectual, artistic and practical skills.  Nature school will prepare our young students for their educational journey prioritizing empathy, teamwork, and environmental stewardship.

Curriculum

The curriculum at Little Wing is planned by teachers Amy and Claire and follows the natural changes of the seasons and rhythms of the year. With carefully curated and rotated free-play and open ended options, as well as enchanting circle time content and projects, your child will develop a strong love for learning that will stay with them for a lifetime.

Nature-based

Learning comes easy when nature creates the lessons for us. When children are given access to a safe and exciting outdoor space, they are given maximum benefits in both health and development outcomes.  The DCYF and UW released a study showcasing the benefits of nature-based learning:

  • Physical Benefits: Outdoor play provides more vigorous, varied, and sustained play; improves gross and fine motor development, including bone health, balance, coordination, endurance, spatial awareness, core strength, and posture.

  • Cognitive Benefits: Outdoor, nature-based play supports improved executive functioning and self-regulation abilities; increases observation and problem-solving skills; increases attention and focus; and challenging play supports children’s resilience, independence, and self-confidence.

  • Social and Emotional Benefits: Nature-based play supports children’s development of empathy for the natural world and an emotional connection to special places, laying the foundation for environmentally-responsible attitudes and behaviors and reduced stress, anxiety, and depression.

Social-emotional

This social-emotional theme is key stone to our teaching practices.  At Little Wing teachers and parents work together to support the development and the ability for children to recognize and regulate emotions, expand empathy, learn strategies for conflict resolution, stand up for themselves and others and develop a virtuous self.
